Present in Expos since the 19th century, Bulgaria joined the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) on 31st of March, 1960. Since then, the country has successfully participated in EXPO 1998 Lisbon, EXPO 2000 Hannover, EXPO Aichi, Japan 2005, EXPO 2008 Zaragoza and EXPO 2010 Shanghai.

In 1998 Bulgaria was a proud participant in EXPO 1998 Lisbon, which gathered over 11 million visitors under the theme ‘’The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future’’. Just within the first seven days, Bulgaria’s pavilion with an area of 324 sq. meters, attracted over 29 thousand people, showcasing the rich Bulgarian heritage.

EXPO 2000, Germany’s first World Expo, took place in Hannover, under the theme “Humankind-nature-technology”, gathering 18 million visitors. The theme of the Bulgarian pavilion was “A life of Nature” and the song “Bulgaria, Millennial Beauty”, lyrics by Andrey Avramov and music by Lyubomir Denev, became the Bulgarian anthem for EXPO 2000.

EXPO 2005 Aichi took place in Japan under the theme “Nature’s Wisdom”. A total of 121 countries participated in EXPO 2005, each presenting their own interpretation of the theme. Under its chosen theme: “Nature’s Wisdom and Gifts from Nature – Essentials for Human Health, Lifestyle and Tolerant Coexistence”, Bulgaria proudly presented all of its amazing gifts, including Bulgaria’s rose oil, yogurt, wine, honey and herbs.

Over half a million were the people who visited the Bulgarian pavilion, with an area of 383sq. meters, during EXPO 2008 Zaragoza. Inspired by the theme of EXPO 2008, “Water and sustainable development”, Bulgaria showcased its unique water resources, the traditions in their use and the country’s potential for SPA tourism.

In 2010 Bulgaria took part in EXPO 2010 Shanghai, which broke records for international participation and visitor numbers with over 73 million visitors passing through the gates of the EXPO throughout its six month duration. Bulgaria’s theme was “City with a shared heritage” and the pavilion had an area of 324 sq. meters.
